Blue Beauty – Our commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly and pure beauty
Over the last year, the sustainable beauty movement has coined a new term – Blue Beauty. I am sure you are very familiar with ‘Green Beauty’ which focuses on using clean, sustainably sourced ingredients. Blue Beauty, however, is a term that has been growing amongst sustainable beauty lovers circle and is a new movement that takes “Green Beauty” to a whole new level.
Blue Beauty is about making a conscious effort to not only reduce the negative impact beauty brand’s products have on the environment, but also looking at ways a brand’s practices can contribute back to and have a positive impact on the environment. Ways that brands can do this include limiting plastic waste, making it easier to recycle goods, reducing the use of chemicals that negatively affect our oceans and wildlife and contributing to earth-friendly causes.
It is so important that brands continue to consciously pursue both Green and Blue Beauty standards, as they both play a crucial role in the fight against climate change and global biodiversity loss.
Edible Beauty’s Blue Beauty Commitment
100% recyclable packaging
8 million tons of plastic is dumped into the oceans every year, killing our precious marine life. Our aim is to find a way to provide 100% recyclable and biodegradable packaging for our products to help reduce the amount of plastic that is ending up in our oceans.
Our products are packaged in either glass, recyclable, sugar cane or PCR (recycled plastic) packaging that can also be recycled. We have created a Natural Zero Waste Deodorant that reduces landfill completely on a daily amenity we all use and we have gone to great lengths to ensure that the pouches that house our Bloom of Youth Infusion Mask are recyclable.
Parts such as pumps, pipettes and caps can be taken to your nearest participating David Jones store to be recycled.
FSC certified packaging
FSC certification ensures that our packaging is sourced from responsibly and sustainably managed forests, that provide environmental, social and economic benefits. The FSC’s vision is that we can meet our current need for forest products (e.g. paper and timber), without compromising the health of our beautiful forests for future generations.
The FSC are striving to achieve this vision through a set of 10 principles that apply to FSC certified forests around the world. The principles include things such as respecting the rights of indigenous peoples to own and manage their lands, ensuring the biodiversity of forests is maintained, and that forests are CO2–neutral (meaning that no more trees are cut down than what the forest can manage to reproduce).
All of our outer cartons are made of FSC certified card and are also recyclable! Packaging that is FSC certified will show this logo:
Biodegradable packing peanuts and recyclable mailer boxes.
Being environmentally friendly is important to us in every stage of the purchasing process! This includes how we package our goods to send them to you. Our mailer boxes are recyclable, and the packaging peanuts we use to protect your glass skincare bottles are biodegradable!
Our packing peanuts are made of a material known as Biofill which has been manufactured from renewable resources and is made of 100% natural starch making it compostable whilst being static, odour and dust free.
These packing peanuts dissolve completely in about 30 seconds when rinsed under water! Try it yourself! You will see the peanuts quickly disappear when water is applied to them.
Ocean friendly sunscreen
You would be familiar with the scary impact that conventional sunscreen ingredients are having on our coral and marine life. It is scary! A staggering 4-6 thousand tonnes of sunscreen enters our oceans and reefs every year. More than 60% of our coral reefs are being impacted by the high volume of chemicals contained in sunscreens, and the common sunscreen chemical Oxybenzone has been shown to cause coral bleaching. The coral isn’t the only thing being harmed by chemicals in sunscreen – fish, dolphins and other marine life are too.
Our blog post ‘The scary truth – your sunscreen may be killing the ocean and it’s marine life’ explores the other ways that traditional chemical sunscreens are affecting our oceans.
Our Basking Beauty Sunscreen is a physical sunscreen that contains micronised Zinc Oxide. This mineral effectively blocks ultra-violet rays and has not been linked to coral bleaching, nor has it been shown to cause harm to other marine life. Our natural, physical sunscreen formula is also certified reef-friendly, so you can be assured that it won’t cause harm to our precious marine life or oceans!
PETA certified vegan and cruelty-free products
Our certifications are a further guarantee that we will meet our promise to be good for you, and the planet! This means protecting the animals that we share our beautiful home with too.
Each year, more than 100 million animals are killed in US laboratories due to animal testing. Our vegan and cruelty-free PETA certifications mean that we do not conduct or commission any animal tests on ingredients, formulations, or finished products and that they pledge not to do so in the future! We also do not use any animal derived ingredients in our products, and are 100% vegan.
Pure, toxin-free ingredients lists
Every Edible Beauty product contains pure, toxin-free, ‘edible’ ingredients. We believe that if you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, you should not put it on your skin - after all, we absorb 60% of what we put on our skin. Chemicals from our skincare and self-care products can wash off our bodies and enter the waterways when we shower, or into the oceans when we swim. Using 100% natural, toxin-free ingredients means that our products are not only safe for your skin, but also safe for the environment.
Our products are certified toxin-free and certified made-safe.
Reusable makeup remover puffs
We have created our makeup remover puffs to eliminate the use of disposable makeup remover wipes. You can get at least three months use from one wipe by washing and reusing it which means one puff saves 90 disposable wipes from ending up in land fill!
Our passion projects
Our passion projects support communities that need our help – especially those affected by environmental disasters like the Australian bushfire crisis. In light of the 2019/2020 bush fires, we donated 20% of all sales over a weekend in November to animal rescue charity WIRES, whose mission is to save, preserve, and rehabilitate Australian wildlife.
In celebration of Earth Month 2021, we will be planting 1 tree for every order placed during April, through onetreeplanted.org.
We strive to continue to find ways to give back to our planet, and communities through various passion projects. For more information on our other past passion projects, click here.
